There are basically 3 dimensions you need to know in order to find out how much gravel you need.

1- The Length of the area.

2- The Width of the area.

3- How deep you want to have the gravel. We recommend that you have at least 3 inches of gravel on all applications. Most landscaping companies apply a weed barrier fabric on the ground before putting the gravel down. The purpose of this is to keep the weeds out. It you put the weed barrier down and then only put an inch or so of gravel over it, then in a short period of time, the ultra-violet rays from the sun will rot out the fabric and the weeds will ruin your gravel bed. So make sure that when you choose a gravel size, it is deep enough to not let the light down through the rock.  Larger gravel sizes will require a deeper application than the smaller sizes. Smaller sizes texture however is not as interesting as the larger sizes texture.  So you need to decide whether to decorate with strong colors and use smaller gravel for the rich feel, or use larger pieces of less colorful rock and go for the strong texture.

A good rule of thumb would be as follows:

1/2 -1 inch gravel size  2.5 inches deep

1-2 inch gravel size 3-4 inches deep

2-4 inch gravel size 4-6 inches deep

3-8 inch gravel size 5-8 inches deep.

Most gravel is flatter in shape so that it will have a much thinner dimension when it is on the ground. So realize that even though the gravel or cobble is called a 4 inch size, it will probably only be 2-3 inches thick.
