    Stacking Style

(Remember that you typically can not tell which type of stacking style has been used after the wall is complete. This is mostly for economy and strength) We have seen where some of these walls are less expensive than others, in no set pattern. Sometimes the structural walls are more money and the Max Stack walls are less, and vice versa. We will work hard to help you find the best wall for the price and your needs.

Brick Stack= The brick stack takes rocks that are similar in size and stacks them like bricks. each rock uses the smallest face out. This option is for an application that has the maximum number of consistent sized rows in a retaining wall. This style is a very stable way to stack rock, and the customers using this method will be able to stack the rocks more steeply than the Max Stack.

Structural Stack= This stacking style is used where it is required that the wall be more steep, and as structurally sound as possible. Sometimes there will be a sidewalk at the bottom of the wall and a driveway at the top of the wall. If this is the case and there is not enough room to tip the wall back into the hill like on the Max stack, then you will want to use a structural stack. This style requires the rocks to drop in size on each row, giving a very structurally sound rock retaining wall if done correctly. This is not necessary when using rocks in short "decorative only" types of rock retaining.

Max Stack= Quite often this is the most economical retaining style. This style requires a very shallow slope, 45 degrees if possible. This style will use the largest face forward and also decrease the size of the rocks on each row as the rows go up the hill.  This type of retaining is more easy to build using a mini-excavator with a thumb.  Skid loaders are difficult to use for this style.

Rock Thickness Options

Rock Thickness= We can spend extra time finding rocks that are a little thinner or thicker if it will help your rock application. We do charge a little more to spend the extra time, so we recommend the regular mix of thicknesses unless you require a special thickness. Possible reasons for wanting a bulkier rock would be that you are using a skid-steer (bobcat) to set the rocks. It makes it much easier to install the bulkier rocks with these machines.  The rocks can be dropped on the ground and not have to be tipped up during installation, which is very hard to do with a bobcat. The disadvantage of this approach is that each rock is heavier since it is more bulky, so you will receive less rocks, and you will also pay more for the delivery.   Flatter rocks can be easier to work with when using a small mini-excavator. Even though they may cost a little more money for the delivery, you will get more rocks and square footage for that extra cost that more than make up for the extra cost. Usually structural walls would not use a flatter rock unless you want the look of as many rows as possible. We do not guarantee that you will have all rocks in a certain size or thickness. We will only work to find the closest special sizes that are available during the loading of your rock. A Regular Mix will include whatever comes out of the ground when we load.

3- Determine Rock Thickness (Flat, Regular Mix or Bulky)

Vertical Height

This measurement is the actual vertical height needed to retain the terrace or hill. An average height is generally ok if there is not more than a 30% change in height. If there is more than 30% change in height, it may be better to split the wall into multiple walls in order to make sure the number of rock rows will work for your design.

4-Find the average VERTICAL height of the wall in feet.  Wall1   Wall2   Wall3  Wall4

Horizontal Space (How far the wall is tipped into the hill)

This is the amount of yard that the wall will take up in your yard. (measurement from the front of the bottom rock to the front-top of the top rock).

This measurement helps us find the slope of the face of the wall.  The recommended horizontal space for any rock retaining wall is the same number as the vertical height.  This leaves the wall at a 45 degree angle which really makes it so that the plants can grow between the rocks and glue the rocks together. Erosion will wash dirt to the bottom of the wall every time the sprinklers come on if the plants cant take hold and glue the rocks together.

Example shows the added face footage of a 45 degree angle wall

Remember that Structural and Brick Stacking styles are not effected by this measurement as shown in the two walls below. You can tip your slope into the hill and it will not cost you more rocks (up to a 45 degree angle) See example of the same structural stack built with and without a lot of slope:

5-Find the Horizontal Space required for the wall, in feet. (recommended to use a number close to the same number as the Vertical height. (A little less is ok)

If you are only selecting a 1 Row terrace, then enter 1 foot for the horizontal space. This means that the showing face of the rock will be tipped into the hill one foot.

Rows of rocks in the wall

Determine the number of rows of rocks you want in your retaining wall. The more rows you have, the less expensive it will be, however the less stable it will be if it is very steep (See Horizontal Space for information on how steep the wall should be).

*For Golden Sunset and Desert Cinnamon boulders, you will not be able to have definite rows. These rock colors are more like puzzle pieces, and also slab like, and are not consistent in thickness or shape, enough to count on an exact numbers of rows. Also Desert Cinnamon and Golden Sunset boulders are so much thinner in shape that it could require 5-10 rows in a structural or brick stack where any other rock may only need only 2-3 rows.  Click here for an example of a wall showing one of these colors mentioned.

Space Between Rocks

8-Desired space between the rocks in inches. Three inches is a standard amount which leaves enough space between the rocks to plant vegetation that will glue the rocks together as the plant life becomes established. (this space is only from left to right and not bottom to top)

Our pricing changes depending on the number of available working days you will allow us to deliver your order. Please answer the questions below so that we can give you a better price if you can allow up to 10 working days to deliver your order, if you decide to go through with the order after your quote comes back to you. Just make these dates the same if you would need delivery on a specific day.

Afternoon only

Can deliver any time of the day.

14- Is there enough space on your property to bring a Dump truck  or semi truck WITH a long dump trailer behind the truck? The price may be lower if we can maximize the hauling efficiency.  Usually bringing a trailer requires a road about 30 feet wide for the last 150 feet before the dumping spot, IF there is ANY turn to get into the job access. If the truck can back straight down the road into the yard and not have to turn, then the trailer can be backed into a 15 foot wide access. Almost any job where we are dumping into the road can handle a pup trailer behind the dump truck. All jobs using just a dump truck and no trailer will need 10 and preferably 12 feet wide to access a back yard.

We do not have enough space to back a trailer into our yard or project.

We do have enough space to back a truck and trailer up the street and on to our project or yard.
